Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)
Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) is a process through which teachers and other educational professionals work collaboratively to develop plans and take steps for students who are experiencing difficulties in the school setting.
The I&RS process begins when a teacher notifies the I&RS team that they would like to meet to discuss the difficulties they have observed a student experiencing. Prior to the meeting, the teacher will reach out to the student's family to discuss the student's interests, strengths, areas for growth, and the goals they have for their child. At the meeting, the I&RS team discusses what steps have already been taken to help support the student and creates a plan of additional supports to put in place. This plan is implemented for a period of 6 to 8 weeks before the I&RS team reconvenes to assess the student's progress and determine if a plan is still needed and, if so, how it should be revised moving forward.
Please note that I&RS is not a special education or basic skills program. Rather, it is a team-based effort by staff to provide assistance and help support students in the ways that they need to help them grow as learners.
